In a setback to the Opposition, Mr Harivansh of the Janata Dal (United), the NDA nominee for the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman’s election, was on Thursday elected to the post. The motion for election of Mr Harivansh was carried with 125 members voting in favour and 105 voting in favour of Congress MP B K Hariprasad.
After the division, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu declared him elected. ‘I declare Mr Harivansh as elected to the post of Deputy Chairman,’ the Chairman said. Earlier, Mr Naidu accepted the motions moved for both the candidates.
Motion in favour of election of Mr Harivansh was moved by Mr Ram Gopal Yadav and Ms Vandana Chavan, while that in favour of Mr Harivansh were moved by Mr Amit Shah, Mr Ram Vichar Netam and Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa of SAD.
Mr Harivansh was congratulated on his election by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad and members of various political parties in the House.
Felicitating him, the Prime Minister said it is in fitness of things that Mr Harivansh was elected to the coveted post on a day the country is remembering its martyrs on the anniversary of Quit India Movement.
Leader of the opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad also congratulated Mr Harivansh, saying his long stint as journalist will help him to discharge his duties in the new capacity.
Leader of the House Arun Jaitley, who was undergoing treatment, also returned to the House on Thursday. Mr Jaitley said, ‘with the election of newly-elected Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh, the level of public discourse will be elevated mainfold.’
