Boat carrying around 40 people capsizes near Aswaklanta Temple. 12 have been rescued while process of rescuing others is still on.
Reportedly, the boat had hit the ongoing JICA construction activities, which led to the capsizing of the boat. SDRF-NDRF teams have rushed to the spot.
Search and rescue operation is on. Two people have reportedly lost their lives in the accident.
One Ankita Baruah, who was rescued, is in a critical condition and had been sent for medical attention.
The people rescued till now are Rajesh Saha (45), Piyushi Saha (4), Rinki Saha (28), Nuruddin (26), Jitumoni Das (38) and Minakhi Das (30).
According to reports, the boat developed a technical glitch following which it collided with a water supply project near Ashwaklanta Temple in the Brahmaputra.
There were 33 passengers on the ferry and three others were controlling the boat.
11person has died and 11 people have been rescued so far. NDRF and SDRF have been rushed to the spot.
The route taken by the boat is a daily one used to travel from north Guwahati to Guwahati city.
Brahmaputra river boat was carrying students
Among those in the boat were students. Sources said the boat, which was carrying students, hit pillars of an ongoing construction project.
The engine failed and the boat broke into two after the impact. Some of the passengers swam to safety. A team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is conducting rescue operations.
11 dead bodies has been recovered so far, said Kamal Baishya, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup.
